The Department has a staff of ten investigators who are occasionally supplemented by private licensed investigators. Investigators are assigned to investigate cases at the request of attorney staff. Investigators work closely with attorneys on their cases. 

Typical duties include interviewing witnesses, preparing reports on witness statements, photographing crime scenes, collecting documentary and physical evidence, subpoenaing witnesses and assisting attorneys in trials or contested hearings where evidence is being presented.

Permanent Investigator positions are filled through a civil service examination process announced and conducted periodically by the Contra Costa County Human Resources Department.
