2014-2015 Recipients of the Keller Landfill grants are named

MARTINEZ (Aug. 12, 2014) – The Keller Canyon Landfill Mitigation Fund is anticipated to receive about $1.3 million from the landfill during fiscal year 2014-15.
Eighty groups or projects were awarded funds from the grant program administered by District V Supervisor Federal Glover. The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Glover’s recommendation’s at their meeting today.
“There were 130 applications for the funds,” said Glover, “the highest number we’ve ever had.”
“Clearly, the need for many of the programs continues to grows despite the stablization of the economy,” said Glover, who administers the grant fund.
The mitigation fund was created by the supervisors when voters approved to locate a dumpsite in the hills south of Bay Point and Pittsburg. The amount varies according to the tonnage delivered to the landfill. This year’s fund of $1,284,650 is based on the anticipated tonnage that will be delivered to the landfill for the fiscal year 2014-2015.
Most of the money is distributed to county agencies and nonprofit organizations that improve the quality of life in Bay Point and Pittsburg after a strict evaluation process by a review committee that includes members of the community.
This year’s awards go to a wide-ranging list of programs that include activities for seniors and youth at the Ambrose Center, food programs, sports leagues, scholarships, violence prevention, after-school programs and health.
