Who is Eligible
In Contra Costa County, many people need health insurance but can not afford it. The Affordable Care Act ensures that health care coverage is affordable or free for low income residents, regardless of age or pre-existing conditions. The Contra Costa County Employment and Human Services and Covered California, the state’s insurance marketplace, will help people find out if they qualify for free federal financial assistance that will lower their costs.
There are three financial assistance programs to help ensure everyone can afford health care. These programs are available to legal residents of California, including individuals age 19-64, who meet certain income requirements and do not have access to affordable health insurance with minimum coverage standards from an employer or another government program.
- Medi-Cal assistance: Medi- Cal provides free health care coverage for those who qualify. This includes people with disabilities and those with an income of less than $15,856 for a single individual and $32,499 for a family of four.
- Tax credits: Tax credits are available to help lower the cost of your insurance premium, which is the amount you pay every month to buy health insurance. When you purchase health insurance through Covered California, tax credits can be immediately applied to your insurance premium, reducing the amount you pay each month.
- Cost-sharing subsidies: Cost-sharing subsidies reduce the amount an individual or family has to pay when they receive health care services. These expenses might include copayments for medical services or other costs you pay when you receive medical care.
